Farewell, President Cory Aquino

Corazon Aquino of the Philippines, whose conquest of one of the 20th century’s most corrupt dictators made her a global icon of democracy, died on Saturday August 1, 2009 after a 16-month battle against colon cancer. She was 76.
She was the president from 1986 to 1992. But she is remembered, more than two decades after the fact, as the slim woman in yellow who led the “People Power” revolution that toppled dictator Ferdinand Marcos.
To a woman of great courage and love, you will be immensely missed.

Just want to share with you part of the speech she made before the US Congrss in 1987 more than a year after she assumed the presidency:
“Three years ago, I said thank you, America, for the haven from oppression, and the home you gave Ninoy, myself and our children, and for the three happiest years of our lives together. Today, I say, join us, America, as we build a new home for democracy, another haven for the oppressed, so it may stand as a shining testament of our two nation’s commitment to freedom,” Aquino had said and was rewarded with a standing ovation from teary-eyed US legislators.

This is one of my most fave parts of the speech.
Archibald Macleish had said that democracy must be defended by arms when it is attacked by arms, and with truth when it is attacked by lies. He failed to say how it shall be won.
